New Paltz Rallies Past Scarlet Raiders In Opener

NEW PALTZ, NY -- Junior forward Robert Campos gave Rutgers-Newark a 1-0 halftime edge, but SUNY New Paltz rallied with a pair of second-half tallies to spoil the Scarlet Raiders' season opener.

The Raiders (0-1) banged a shot off the post in each half in the tightly contested non-conference battle.

The Panthers (1-0) held a slight edge in shots, 10-9, but each squad put four shots on goal.  Junior forward Innocent Buule put both of his shots on the net while junior midfielder Estiven Benitezhad the other chance that was stopped by Purchase goalkeeper Peter Carmel.

Junior goalkeeper Matt Zielykmade two first-half saves.

Anton Shipman netted the tying goal on a header off of a corner kick in the 58th minutes before James Altadonna dribbled past a defender to tally the game winner in the 81st minute. 

The Raiders next travel to Norton, Mass., the face Brandeis in the opening round of the Addidas Kick-Off Classic at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
