NEWARK, NJ – Guards
Kendra Johnson and
ShaQuanna Marshall combined for 33 points to help carry Rutgers-Newark past UMass Boston, 51-37, in The Golden Dome Arena.
Johnson scored a game-high 17 points while adding a team-high nine rebounds plus five steals and three assists as Rutgers-Newark (9-3) won its second straight non-conference contest. Marshall added 16 points, four rebounds, three steals and an assist as the Scarlet Raiders forced 31 turnovers against the Beacons (2-8).
In a game in which neither team shot 30% from the floor, sophomore forward
Jasmine Daniels came up with five the Raiders' 19 steals while senior forward
Lori Nieves chipped in a dozen points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists.
Freshman center Kirsten Morrison notched a double-double for UMB with 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with a pair of blocked shots and two steals, but she was the only Beacon in double figures in scoring. Junior guard Elisa Ogawa added seven points, eight rebounds and a team-high four assists while freshman forward Brittany Moore came off the bench for six points and seven rebounds.
Marshall, who netted 10 points in the first half, had six during an opening 10-0 run by the Raiders as UMB did not score from the field until Ogawa nailed a trey with 10:57 left in the half to make it 14-5. Rutgers-Newark led by as many as 15 points during the opening 20 minutes before settling for a 27-16 lead at the half.
Johnson netted a dozen points in the second half as the Raiders never let the Beacons get closer than 10 points before pulling away to lead by as many as 18 points. Morrison kept UMB within striking distance with 13 points in the final period.
Rutgers-Newark reenters New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Saturday visiting The College of New Jersey for a women's and men's doubleheader. The women tip off at 1 p.m. with the men's teams playing at 3 o'clock in Packer Gym.
