Scarlet Raiders Headed To Virginia For NCAA Opening Round

RUTGERS-NEWARK MEN'S BASKETBALL

NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark has received an at-large bid to the NCAA D-III Men's Basketball Championship Tournament and will take on Christopher Newport in Newport News, VA, Saturday night in the opening round.

2013 NCAA D-III Men's Basketball Championship Tournament Bracket

Rutgers-Newark at Christopher Newport Fact Sheet

The Scarlet Raiders (20-7) earned just their second NCAA playoff berth after posting their best year ever in the New Jersey Athletic Conference with a record of 13-5.  The team bowed in the conference championship game to Ramapo, 67-65, on Friday night.  Rutgers-Newark received its first NCAA at-large berth in 2010.

Christopher Newport (21-5) rolled through the USA South tournament to gain the eight-team league's automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs.

It figures to be a low-scoring game as each team's success has hinged on defense.

Three Raiders seniors – Hussein Abdelmaksoud, Al'Don Muhammad and Mark Moorman – were freshman reserves on the 2010 NCAA team.
