2017 Season Preview
PITMAN, N.J. (February 21, 2017) – Junior third baseman
Brian Boulineau and freshman hurler
Brandon Terrizzi were honored by the New Jersey Athletic Conference Tuesday morning, earning Player and Rookie Pitcher of the Week honors, respectively.
Â
Rutgers-Newark opened its 2017 season last weekend, going 2-1. The Scarlet Raiders picked up a thrilling come-from-behind win to start the year Friday night and routed Penn State University-Abington Sunday.
Â
Terrizzi – in his first collegiate outing – helped Rutgers-Newark to the 18-4 win over Abington. The Hawthorne, N.J. native tossed a scoreless inning of relief in the triumph, striking out two and not allowing a hit. He was one of four Rutgers-Newark pitchers who did not allow a run last week and the only freshman.
Â
Boulineau was one of several Scarlet Raiders to swing the bat very well in the team's first three contests, going 5-for-12 with three doubles, five RBI and two runs scored. Boulineau posted multi-hit games against Frostburg State University (3-for-5, 2 2B, R, 3 RBI) and Abington (2-for-3, R, 2 RBI, 2B), driving in a team-high five runs in those two contests.
Â
The Randolph native is hitting .417 so far and is leading the Scarlet Raider regulars with a lofty .667 slugging percentage. The third baseman boasts a .429 on-base percentage after one week and has a 1.096 OPS (on-base plus slugging).
Â
The Scarlet Raiders return to game-action February 28 at Diamond Nation in Flemington, N.J. against PSU-Abington. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
