Rutgers-Newark SAAC Constitution

ARTICLE I: PURPOSE

The SAAC will act as a liaison and maintain lines of communication between student-athletes and the athletic administration to advance the interests and pool the resources of all athletic programs at Rutgers-Newark. The SAAC will also provide feedback and insight into the athletic department’s issues and concerns. In addition, the SAAC will organize community service efforts; create student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees in order to promote a positive student-athlete image on campus and in the surrounding community.

ARTICLE II: Criteria for Membership
1. Two members from each team
     A. Members will be chosen by coach of team
     B. Must be academically eligible
     C. Possess leadership qualities

2. Each member serves a one year term
     A. Membership can be renewed each year

3. New members should be part of the Sophomore or Junior Class.
     A. Can choose a Freshman only if coach feels no one else is acceptable

4. Both members should attend every meeting
     A. In an event that one member cannot attend, the other should make sure he/she will be there
     B. If a member misses two meetings, they will be dismissed from the council
     C. The coach will be notified of the dismissal and asked to choose another member for the council

ARTICLE III: Organizational Structure
1. Meetings:
     A. Will be held once a month – first Monday of each month for each semester

2. Executive Committee will consist of:
     A. Chairperson
     B. Vice-Chairperson
     C. Secretary

3. Each Member serves a one year term
     A. Membership can be renewed each year

4. Responsibilities of Executive Committee
     A. Chairperson –
          Oversee all meetings and keep council up to date on important NCAA information. Assists in setting and reviewing agendas for monthly meetings. Function as a spokesperson for SAAC. If necessary attend athletic department meetings.
     B. Vice-Chairperson –
          Oversee & assist all meetings that chairperson cannot attend. Keep attendance for all meetings.
     C. Secretary-
          Record all information discussed at meetings. Type and distribute minutes of the
meetings to all members within a week after the meeting.

5. Committees: There are four committees with two elected leaders
     A. External Relations:
          Liaison between student-athletes and community. Organize volunteer events and other programs with the surrounding community.
     B. Legislation:
          Have knowledge of existing relations with administration and research new proposals. Records athletes feedback on proposals and presents information to administration. Have relationship with Student Government. 
     C. Internal Affairs / Public Relations:  Voice concerns of Fellow Student-Athletes and conducts all publicity for SAAC events. Responsible for the upkeep of SAAC website. Adds meetings & activities to the University calendar.
     D. Student-Athlete Interests:  Creates activities & events and traditions for student-athletes.

6. ADVISOR:  Provide the council with pertinent information involving student-athletes, discuss athletic department issues affecting the student-athletes. Also keep student-athletes updated with information involving the University and the NCAA.

ARTICLE IV: Elections
1. Regular Elections:
     A. Elections of Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Secretary shall occur by vote of all SAAC members
present during the meeting of the first of each semester.
     B. Any SAAC may nominate any other SAAC member for election
     C. Each nominee must accept or decline nomination
     D. Votes will be tailed following the meeting by the advisory and be communicated at the next meeting.

ARTICLE V: Voting
1. Issues will be voted on by the council to make decisions on
     A. NCAA Legislation
     B. Rutgers-Newark Athletic Issues
     C. Make new amendment for the SAAC constitution.
2. There will be discussion of the issue by the council
3. A majority vote will be used to decide council’s ‘stance’ on the issue.
